Deleted Active Directory users, get backup errors

This is on Windows server 2003. I have deleted some users from active directory which said it was going to delete the mailboxes too.
The problem is that the Friday night backup produced errors from veritas like
V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory ?Fred Blogs [fred.blogs] and its subdirectories.

Does this mean that the mailbox still exists in some way? If so, how can I delete it?

Found it via a veritas support site. I should have purged mailboxes from Exchange System Manager as well.
