delete services and re-install

hi, i am running windows 2000 server and microsoft exchange 5.5. after started the sever, the exchange internet mail service is nor starting up - meaning it stays in starting mode.
any idea what caused this and how i can fix that?

Event log IDs, what have you done since you last had it working, anything else pertinent?
