I hope I have right Forum, if not, please point me in the right direction.

I have a small MP3 player and from time to time music files seam to get corrupted: folders that used to contain mp3 files get ‘converted’ to something that resembles ‘empty’ files with size 0. I usually Delete them and reload the music again. I have done it several times, and now I don’t have any more space on my player. I did not add any new music, I just keep re-loading the same music every time.

So I assume old music files are still there, I just cannot see them.
How can I ‘see’ them and how can I delete them?

Have fun.

Well that would be small electronics, which there is no forum for, but pc hardware- peripheral is the closest. That being said. Are the files corrupting on the mp3 player, and are fine on the pc? if that is the case, I would search google for issues relating to the make and model of the mp3 player, there may be a way to low level format the storage partition or a firmware update that can take of the issue. Also have you gone to the manufactures web site to look for a forum there?

My toaster is acting up............

But seriously, those were all great suggestions.

If the player is seen as a drive in Windows, try running ChkDsk to check your Player (drive) for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Do other machines have a problem with the Player?

Windows might mark areas of any drive as "bad" and stop the writing of data to such sectors.

Data recovery.

The first link is freeware, the others are free to try before purchase. The last two are a slightly better product in my opinion.

PC Inspector

GetDataBack

Data Recovery tools for Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista/Windows 7

Plenty of other recovery software listed here.

Thanks linney,

I did try your suggestion, got: "Your device or disk was successfully scanned. No problems were found on the device or disk. It is ready to use"

I will check the links you provided. Thank you.

goombawaho - my toaster is fine, just my player and some people at TT give me grief :)

Have fun.

They pay me extra for giving grief. No wait - that's my other job. TT is all volunteer. I'd say an MP3 player that syncs with a computer is fair game.

Maybe we need a miscellaneous category: Questions on toasters, VCRs, sprinkler systems, etc. would be welcome.

also worth noting, Flash memory does have a limited read / write life. the cheaper the player, im guessing the cheaper the flash.

What I ended up doing is... Format it.

I am an old school – ‘format’ to me is: you are going to loose everything you have on that device, including anything that is actually needed to run this little player. I guess all the ‘running’ stuff is not affected, so after the Format, I just re-loaded my music and all is good with the world... :)

Have fun.
