My OS is 98SE. I have more than 17GB of Hard Drive space and 512MB of RAM.
I am only able able to defrag in Safe Mode. Any suggestions?

That's acceptable. What happens when you try in normal mode?

Dear micker377,
When I try defragging in 'normal mode'...nothing happens. If I click on 'show details' the screen is white (there are no little squares at all). The progress bar stays at 0% no matter how long I leave defrag running.
Thanks,
Peter

Google for "newdefrag.zip", it is the WinME version of Defrag, much faster! It will cut down on the time you need to stay in Safe Mode.

Andy.

That's an odd problem but not a big problem. When I defrag, I also defrag in safe mode so no background programs are running. It makes my defrag process faster and more efficient.

I think there is a background program that hinders your defragging. Check the background programs that you are running in the Task Manager.

Dear masterchicker,
How do I, 'Check the background programs that you are running in the Task Manager'?

You invoke the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Background programs are found in the Processes tab of the Task Manager. You must be careful when closing a background program because it might affect your windows functionality and performance.

Or you could do this:
Run msconfig --> in the Startup tab, deselect those programs you think are not really needed. Again be careful when unchecking startup programs.

Control-alt-delete. Shutdown everything EXCEPT explorer and systray. Before you do this, go into screensaver - power and make sure that monitor and hard drive are set to never shut down and that screensaver is set to none.
