defragment keeps restarting my computer

i installed a new hard drive on xp pro but every time i try to defragment the new drive, the computer shuts down. how can i fix this?
thanks!

in windows 98 you can boot into safe mode and run defrag from there-it helps eliminate a lot of interference from other programs.

Does xp have some equivalent to the win9x safe mode you can boot to?
