Help! When performing maintenance, it completes delete unnecessary files but it wont complete check hard disk for errors, so as a result of this problem it wont defragment. now it runs soooooo slooooly TIA Mike...
The PC's a 1999 Packard Bell Pulsar c433 64mb 6.4gb h/drive. running win98 se. ok so it's still lives in a 'cave'and runs on 'gas'..

Run both scandisk and defragmenter in Safe Mode (hit F8 during bootup before Windows logo screen appears). Not only will it run faster, but it will have a greater chance of completing.

Don't forget to leave all programs closed and the screensaver/power options disabled. They can interupt the process.

As a precaution, have any important files on the computer backed up in a couple places. If it turns out SCANDISK or DEFRAG do end up saying there are disk errors, then (1) you will already have protected your data and (2) you can download the manufacturer's disk diagnostics program and see what its diagnosis is. Remember, of all the parts inside your computer, the hard drive is the most likely to fail first.
