Recently I installed Diskkeeper 7 on my Xp machine to see if it would improve my harddisc access times (it tends to be rather slow) anyway after removing it I am receiving a strange error when I try to defragment my drive.

Snap-in failed to initialise.
Name: Disk Defragmenter
CLSID:{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}

This has rendered my standard WinXp defrag unusable. Are there any fixes for this or would I be better off just doing a fresh install?

It's probably a case of reregistering a Dll file used by the Defragmenting program.

305831 - "MMC Snap-In Failed to Initialize Disk Management Extension" Error Message Starting Disk Management

Perhaps Dfrgsnap.dll or one of the other Defrag Dll's in System32.

Run following from start/run: Press OK after entry.

regsvr32 Dfrgsnap.dll

If it's is plain old file corruption, then running the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy, may fix it.

Thank you Linney for the reply, I appreciate your help.

I ran both but neither seemed to fix the issue. Running regsvr32 fixed the error message but when I click on WinXp's defrag utility it instead sends me to the management console with an action canceled screen.

Would there be a way to extract the original files from the Xp disc perhaps?

In MsConfig you can use the Expand option to extract files.

What happens if you click on dfrg.msc in System32? Does that bring up the Defrag window?

Maybe you will have to recreate the Disk Defragnenting Snap-in. "If you add a snap-in to a console, but then the snap-in becomes damaged, try adding another instance of the same snap-in to the console, configure it as needed, and then remove the first instance of the snap-in". See Help in "Computer Management". "To add an item to a new MMC console for a local computer".

There was a post the other day where Disk Keeper was causing problems with Chkdsk. Perhaps a chat with Support at Disk Keeper would help if there are known issues.

If you only installed Disk Keeper a few says ago maybe you could use System Restore to slip back before you installed it.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
