Defrag Exchange 2000

I have to defrag the c:\ where the exchange database is, because i get a lot of virutual memory errors with specific message that the Partition is very fragmented and not enough memory available.Also the backup takes twice the usual time.

Now how to defragment? File system defragmentation or offline exchange database (esutil) degfragmentation. Is it safe to do the file system degfragmentation on c drive?

Please help me. If any one had faced with a similar problem and done this, your help will be appreciated very much.
