Defrag causes my machine to hang until reboot

I was experiencing slowing on some of my apps on my Win98 machine at home. I ran disk clean and cleaned out temp files, when I started defrag it just hung, I had no mouse response, no keyboard response, just the &quot;busy&quot; cursor.&nbsp;&nbsp;I waited about 10 minutes to see if it would start and it didn't so I gave it the 3 finger salute (ctl+alt+del).&nbsp;&nbsp;I rebooted, ran scandisk, tried defrag again, same thing again.&nbsp;&nbsp;I waited 10 minutes and 3 fingered it again.&nbsp;&nbsp;What could be causing it to hang?&nbsp;&nbsp;is there a defrag I can use without windows being up?&nbsp;&nbsp;Thanks for your help.<br><br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jon <p>Jon Zimmer<br><a href=mailto:b0rg@pcgeek.net>b0rg@pcgeek.net</a><br><a href= > </a><br>You WILL be assimilated, or we can write a script to parse you out.

b0rg -<br><br>Start up the PC as normal.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cancel every startup program / TSR you can (especially any antivirus software).&nbsp;&nbsp;Go into Defrag but hit SETTINGS button first.&nbsp;&nbsp;Uncheck the &quot;Check The Drive For Errors&quot; box.&nbsp;&nbsp;That should do it ~ Defrag as normal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>Let us know the outcome.
