DEFRAG CAUSES BACKUP FAILURE????

I've got a backup failure that I have been unable to diagnose. Here are the details:
NT Server 4.0
Backup Exec 7.3 rev 2570 Single Server Edition

There are two things that I feel may be causing problems with the backup.

1. I ran the trial version of Perfect Disk over the weekend on the server. It did a pretty good job of defraging the server, but the backup hasn't worked since.

2. While doing some housecleaning, one of our IT guys deleted the NT user account that the backup services were using to start up. I recreated the account, but I did not know the password so I changed the password that was set on all of the services that need to start. As far as I can tell, all the backup services will start again but is there somewhere else in the program that the new password needs to be entered?

When I look at the log file, it says that it can't find some of our directories that I KNOW still exist on the server. I'm wonder if the defrag program caused it to lose track of these directories.

In the application event log, Backup exec generates the error:

An unusual error (5) was encountered while enumerating the contents of the directory.

Another error that was in the log once was:

Error - Alert Server failed to successfully logon to MAPI with profile and password supplied.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. I am a programmer who got thrown into the role of Network Admin when the previous Network admin quit!!!

Thanks!!! Mike Rohde

When you change your password, you often have problems with the backup. Search in this forum for password and see how this can be handled.

You'll need to reset/re-enter the password that the account uses to access certain files. I haven't used v7.3 but assume it all fairly similar. Off the top of my head try logging into the server as the backup nt account and password and see if you can access directories etc. I need to rest my brain but I'll try and come back with something a little more specific and useful later

cheers

you'll definately need to re-enter the password by the sounds of things

Thanks for the help guys, I did re-enter the password for the Backup Exec services (under control panel->services). Any ideas where else I would need to enter it? The user I created is set up as a domain admin, so it should have full access to the files.

What I don't understand is the Backup appears to be running fine. It fails after running for about 2 hours (our normal backups take about 4). It also is low on its estimates of the number of files and bytes, i.e. when its running it will estimate it has 8 gb to back up when our past normal backups usually back up about 12 gb.

Anyway, I'm starting a support incident with Veritas, hopefully they can help.

Thanks for the suggestions!! Mike Rohde
