I have read many different articles on defragging. Some suggest that you should defrag after each crash or incorrect shutdown. However recently I have been told that defragging is very hard on the HD...is this correct. At the present I defrag once a week. Is this too much?

Depending on what you do, you may be about right. Defrag will till you if you don't need it.
Have never seen anything that would convince me that you can overdo it. Same hard drives running under unix and multiuser/multitasking agitate the bits about the same way for years without problems.
Only thing to worry about, if the defrag fails you get corruption or lost files.
As far as the defrag on abends, the OS is mostly smart enough to sort itself out on restart. Ed Fair

Thanks for the response. I spend at least 8 hours a day glued to this machine. I don't do a huge amount of downloading... I know I need to boost the RAM and am in the process of doing so. I do spend a lot of time going from one application to another and possibly my crashes are due to my allowing the system resources to get too low.

Try fixing the size of the swapfile - or changing its location. IME a fragmented dynamic swapfile causes more issues than straight data fragmentation. Unix variants separate the swap file to another partition, so this issue never comes about.

Good Luck :)
