This popped up in another thread and I was wondering what the answer is:

Merriam-Webster said:
Main Entry: in·ter·ro·ga·tor
Pronunciation: in-'ter-&-"gA-t&r
Function: noun
1 : one that interrogates
2 : a radio transmitter and receiver for sending out a signal that triggers a transponder and for receiving and displaying the reply
Should the first definition of 'Interrogator' be:

A) One who interrogates; or
B) One that interrogates
and why?

I incline towards A), but I don't have a technical reason - it feels better??!!

I prefer to use 'who' for personal references and 'that' for the impersonal, and 'that' when it's not clear.

Good Luck

I agree with CC: Who for people, That for things.

UniqueFD, SilentAiche and CajunCenturian , I agree. That was the point that I was making when this appeared in the original post.

Who for people, that for things.

that doesn't answer the original post. wasn't the original question is it:

one who interrogates
or
one that interrogates

they both are correct. that's my vote. it seems improper to refer to an inatimate (sp) object as a who, but you could use 'that' or 'who' for people...

as in "he's an interrogator, one that interrogates" just the same as using "he's an interroagtor, one who interrogates"

if i gave too much, just give me the change left.

I think they are both grammatically correct, but I always prefer who when referring to people, and that when referring to anything else. Most people I know don't make the disctinction but it is one that grates on my nerves. To me it sound very inappropriate and unprofessional to say that when referring to people as in "He's the person "that" will be teaching." It sounds better to say: "He's the person who will be teaching.
