Hello All;

Before I ask my question, I will explain my situation:
My fellow co-workers and I share a 256k line which is connected to our main servers a small distance away. I have some files on those servers however that I need on my box here. No problem....just do an scp to grab the files and copy them here. But I know these files are quite large in size and doing an scp on these files will block up our line and eventually everyone will be in an uproar about how slow the network is. I tried to do a 'man scp' do see if there was an option I could use to set the download rate (Say to for example 10k/s, leaving everyone else with another 246k/s of the line) but I was unable to find anything of the sorts. Does anyone know of another method I could use to solve my problem, or have I missed something in the man page?

Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Sounds like you need to go in for some of this

With a suitably equipped firewall / router / host, you should be able to modify the traffic on the SCP port.
You should either be able to
- limit it to x bytes a second
- give priority to other traffic

The second might be better, since you copy at full speed when no-one else is actually using the link.

Or you schedule your copies for say 3am when no-one is around, to get all the files you think you'll need for the next day.
