Is one vCPU equal to one core?

We have Intel Xeon X5450 quad-core processors in our hosts. A VM has 1vCPU. Does that mean is essentially has a single single-core processor? Or does it mean it has a single quad-processor?

For simplicity, yes, 1 vCPU = 1 pCPU logical core

Kinda a follow up on this and looking for a best practice recommendation.

Is there a preference or a difference as to whether it is better to assign 2 processors to a VM or 2 cores to a VM, when given the choice?

I mean my default is to assign 1 proc/1 core to all VMs until it can be proven that CPU is a bottleneck on a VM at which time I will add processing power? Is there any difference if I assign a 2nd vCPU vs assigning a 2nd vCore?
