If I save a default workbook template in the xlstart folder then click on the New Workbook icon on my toolbar my default workbook opens as expected.
However if I use File, New, BlankWorkbook my default workbook is not used.

Also, I want to share this workbook between some 80 people and let them choose to have it as their default. As the xlstart folder is
C:\Documents and Settings\[red]USERNAME[/red]\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART then I will have to mess around with environment values and construct the filepath - unless there is an easier way / alternate path.
(Appreciate that for the latter question I may need to post to VBA forum)

Gavin,

Try this path...
[tt]
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART
[/tt]
or whatever OFFICEnn[/n] is appropriate.

Skip,

for a NUANCE![tongue]

Thanks Skip, saving there seems to take precedence over the template at the path I posted and is not user specific - so that is good and addresses my second point.

However File, New, BlankWorkbook still opens a blank workbook without any of my personalisation (which really is about good practice headers and footers and a tiny modification to the normal style).

A bit more research tells me that this behaviour may have started with XP so any one reading this with a pre 2003/XP version of Office probably won't be able to replicate the behaviour I am experiencing. I guess it does give you a way of bypassing your default template and starting with a plain manilla workbook using all MS's default settings.

One workaround I have seen is to use Tools, Customise, Commands to add the [red]New[/red] (not [red]New...[/red]) command to the File Menu. Now I would like to do this with code (not a problem using the recorder). However I have not yet fathomed how, using VBA, I can rename this to read "New default workbook" or similar. The recorder does not seem to capture that property.

By the way, apologies for delay in my responses - went home to a power cut and will be on holiday for a few days so unable to test in the real environment even if power is now restored at home.
