Dear all,

I have come into an intranet situation which is using sharepoint services.
I want to continue using them but I wish to make the top level site - i.e
my own site with links to some sharpoint areas.
I have read as much as I can but have not yet succeeded in doing this.
If I change the default website in iis to my own site then SPS does not seem
to work.
All help much appreciated.

Sorry to bump this but is it possible to do what I am asking?

If I stop the sharepoint site under IIS then yes, I can change the default site, but I would like to be able to access some areas of the sharepoint site as well.

Cheers,

J

Here is one thing you could try.

In IIS
First
Right click on the default web site and click properities. Click on advance and edit the port to have a host header of X (something like sharepoint)
Next
Right Click on web site --- new --- new site. Link it to the folder with the files you want to use of the site. Make sure to leave the host header blank.

Now in you site you can link pages to and it will link into the site.

Hope I made sense.

Dear Brian,

Thanks for your reply.
This looks like an elegant solution but I just can't get it to work.

Under IIS Web sites I know have 3:-

Default on Port 80, Header = sharepoint
Sharepoint on port 13870, No Header
Intranet(my site) on port 80, No Header

Is this correct?

Kind Regards,

j

Try
Default 80 No Header
Sharepoint 80 Sharepoint
My Site 80 mysite

or is the default site is your site

Default 80 No Header
Sharepoint 80 Sharepoint

Maybe this will help
I am running two web sites and two sharepoint web site on my server set up as so.

Default 80 No Header (My business internet site Sharepoint 80 companyweb (My internal Sharepoint site)
Site 2 80 me.no-ip.biz (personal internet site)
Sharepoint 2 80 me.com (Development site to show clients)

Dear Brian,

This should work I know.

Just to test, if I make my intranet site have a header of 'Intranet' - should the URL work??

Because it doesn't and I'm wondering if I need to set some other setting to allow it to work?

Thanks again,

j

For the computers on the network you need to make sure that they check the IIS server for DNS otherwise they will look into the internet for the site.
IE
Server
IP 192.168.0.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1 (You router)
DNS 192.168.0.100
2nd DNS 4.2.2.2
Computer 1
IP 192.168.0.150
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.100
2nd DNS 4.2.2.2

So now if you use a Host header of "Intranet" Computer 1 will look at the server first before check the web.
Making these changes will locate you default web site and will locate you Sharepoint site.
