Hi,

Can we set a default value for a dimension in PowerPlay cube (ver 7.1), so that the user doesn't need to filter the dimension in PowerPlay Web....?

Thanks,

You can create a cube view with that value selected in the dimension. Then hide the actual cube.

Thanks DoubleD...
But, what I actually meant was that when the cube is opened in PowerPlay Web, then it should have some default value set for some of the dimensions.
Later, the user can change that selection....

Regards,

The cube will open automatically showing the first two dimensions at the highest level. This can not be changed unless a cube view is used. IF you want a specific level from a specific dimension to be opened by default, then you will need to make that level the highest level in one of the first two dimensions.

Cube views will accomplish exactly what you're asking for.
Set your dimensions at the default values you want, then save as a cube view. Give your users the ability to save cube views and each person can have their own "custom" cube.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a difference between what I'm suggesting, and what your requesting.

If I am missing something, please try to explain in a little more detail what it is you're looking to accomplish. Examples are always helpful. (Are you looking for each user to have different defaults, set programatically?)

Would this suggestion work on the web? Is a Cube View an MDC file or a ppx file?

Cube Views are not MDC or PPX files. They are ultimately nothing more than a URL. As I understand it, Cube Views are specific to the web.

Are you using Upfront to disseminate your cubes on the Web?
If so, open a cube on the web, make some changes to dimensions and what not, then click the SaveAs icon in the bottom right corner. Name the Cube View and choose the Upfront Newsbox you want it saved to. If you look on you server, no MDC or PPX files are created, but in Upfront you now see a link to your "custom" view of the cube.

Ok that make sense now. Yes I have seen this before. In fact that is how I share my cubes. Since my users are not very skilled in PP, I create the views, and send them a URL.

I have a problem where I have a "Years" Dimension, and it has about 15 categories. When I publish it to the web I only see 2 categories (years). Thoughts?

Two things to check:
1. Is your web cube actually updating?
To check this, go into PPES. Set the properties of your cube header to display the MDC Update Date & Time.

2. Just because there were 15 categories in your MDL at some point, does not mean your actual cube will have 15 values in that dimension level. Do you really have 15 years worth of data in this cube? You may want to do a Clean House on your MDL. Unless you have some custom categories, then manually clean up your dimensions instead.

We never save our MDL files with anything other than the neccessary categories as it tends to increase the size of the file. And when you have 1000 mdl files on your server it can make a big difference.

Hi,

I am sorry that I couldn't put my query clearly....
Well...I hope this example would make it clear:
I have a cube with Department as one of the dimensions. It has the following category values:
Sales, Finance, Marketing, Production, IT, etc.

Now when the user opens the cube in Upfront, it should open the cube displaying measure values for 'Finance' department, by default. i.e. in the dimension viewer 'Finance' should be selected for Department dimension.
So, if the user wishes to see the details for another department he can do so by changing the selection for the 'Department' dimension.

Please let me know whether this scenario can be handled in dimension view...?

Thanks,

That is exactly what can be accomplished with a "cube view".
After you have published the cube to Upfront, click on the cube, set the Department Dimension to Finance. Click the triple disk symbol on the toolbar in the bottom right corner (SaveAs).

oops...I was thinking about dimension views in PowerPlay...

one more query...will this cube view get refreshed whenever the cube is rebuilt....?

Thanks,

Since a Cube View is nothing more than a URL, and doesn't actually store any data, it can only show what currently exists in the cube. Therefore, when the cube is updated, the View is updated.

devcog,
I think I know what you want. Go to your cube on the web and filter the bullets down to the level you want and create a report view that is desired to see again.
When done, click the "bookmark" button on the bottom button bar. Highlight the URL. Paste the URL into UPfront. Everytime your cube updates, your bookmark will refresh and only show the filtered report you created. This is the easiest way I found to do what you are asking without altering the model/cube, or messing with user classes.
Good luck.
