I have a number of BCM's where i have to change the Default Next Hop Router. if do this via puTTY interface do i have to restart the system? i have also read in the NTP that ip configuration will erase programming. is this true?

normally i would make the change this via unified manager but these system are offsite. firewall and secuirty rules are preventing full functionality of unified manager.

I have a BCM 3.5 if you do remote access via modem set as RAS, the changes made that require a reboot disable the ras and has to be reset onsite. It does work if I schedule the reboot at a later time though. Yes any change to your ip config will require a reboot.

i am trying to use putty to connect to my Nortel PBX (cs1000m).

any idea what to set the "port" to? i've tried 4100 but it does not work.

regards,

IP configuration changes won't erase any programming. You can change the default next hop router without rebooting - it's the same concept as changing a static route through the IP routing tables.

As far as using Putty to get to the CS1000, you need to use the RLOGIN protocol, not SSH. There is a password required to authenticate the session to the PBX. Never tried it with putty, but there's a program called CRT that works rather well.

You can also drop into the command line under putty and change the default route at the NT level if you want to test your settings before you make them permanent. Then, if your new default route doesn't work, just have a remote user reboot the system and it'll come back the way it was.

Something like:
route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your new gateway)

This will be an immediate change, so no need to reboot.
