I am at the HQ site with (4) Cisco 2501 routers, one for each remote site. How should I configure the default gateway on the host computers at the HQ site?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Are you using a routing protocol?

If so, which one??

For the default gateway on the host computers, they will need to point to the router that their subnet connects to. You only need to use the default gateway if you're trying to talk outside of your own subnet, so at that point you can only send directly to your own router. Then the router will take it from there.

If all you have is 4 routers for the different wan connections, then it really doesn't matter. Run RIP, EIGRP, or OSPF (preferred) on all your routers, and pick one for your default gateway. Then the routers will know all the routes.

But he's asking about the gateway on the computers not the routers. The computers have to talk to the router they are directly attached to.

Right... That's what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter which router you'll pick as the default gateway for all the hosts. Since you'll setup a routing protocol for all the routers to know all the routes, then any of your routers will be a good candidate for the default gateway.

If any of your routers are more powerful than the others, then definately choose to use that one.

When you configure the PC at each location you need to set the default route to the local router interface on the IP subnet.

However, what baddos is talking about it the default route for the network will be carried by OSPF. So the local router will get the packet and forward it out the internet connection based on this route. So the PC forwards it to the router, the router forwards it to the Internet connection.
