Hello all,

I'm trying to connect to bellsouth fast dsl with a SpeedStream 5269 modem. It shows no default gateway. I also have a dial up modem through which I'm accessing the internet through MSN. How can I get the dsl modem to recognize a default gateway. I read somewhere that you can only have one default gateway and it is with the dial up modem. Any ideas. The lan connection comes up saying limited connectivity as the dsl modem is not being recognized.

Thanks,
Jon

The easy way is to remove the dialup internet connection. But I am curious how you know that you have no default route through the DSL. You will only have a default route through the dialup if the dialup is enabled. As long as the DSL is the only interface enabled, then it should be your default route.

Try ROUTE PRINT and look for 0.0.0.0. That is the current default route.

Thanks,
I know there's no default gateway throught the DSL becuase when I type ipconfig /all it shows a gateway for the dialup and none for dsl. Also, after giving that command it shows under Windows IP configuration: IP routing enabled....no, and WINS proxy enabled....no.

How do you change the windows ip configuration to routing enabled....yes

I tried the route print and one time it gave me
0.0.0.0. , another time it gave another string of numbers.

I haven't successfully disabled the dial up and I'm starting to think I may need to remove the modem card.

Just do a

route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 <dsl_gw_ip> /p

to add the default gateway of the DSL router.

Still having problems I entered the commannds you gave and it sait "the system cannot find the file specified"

how do you enable dhcp?
How do you enable IP routing- is this the same as above?
I can enter the default gateway, for the dsl, manually if I knew what to enter. It wont take the 0's. It said 0 is not a valid response.

Thanks,

You may have to do:

route change 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 <ip> -p

since you already have a default route listed. Or you can remove and add.

You enable DHCP by pressing Start, then Settings, the Control Panel.
Then selecting Network and choosing the interface that you want to change.
Select File, Properties.
Select the Internet Protocol and press the Properties button.
Choose Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Press OK.
Press OK.

That should be the default configuration of any interface that you add.

But if you don't have the DSL interface set to DHCP, that is probably your routing problem to begin with. When the interface gets its address from the router, it should also get routing information, including a default gateway, from the DHCP request.
