I want to be able to unpack a compressed(ziped) file using director, without a prompt appearing on the screen to ask which directory to put the files into. if possible i would like to define the location for the files to be unpacked to in the code. Does anyone know of a way to do this either using an extra or using a piece of software like winzip. I have experimented with winzip's selfextractor and that prompts for the directory to save to. Any ideas ??

use the command line version of zip, if it still out there somewhere. Was called Pkzip and was what winzip used way back.

don't remember how to use it but it will be something like pkunzip file.zip targetpath so you would use open(pkunzip file.zip targetpath)

Not aware of any xtras but check the xtras list on the macromedia web site. Also check chances are they have covered it at some point in time.
