Hi there,

I had an CCNA exam question where the scenario is a VTP domain with several switches. They are you if a switch has a hardware fault what happens when it goes offline to be fixed? What happens to the VLANs if it was a server. Also what happens to the VLANS when its fixed and it gets back online.
Does anyone know what happens say to VLANS A,B,C if a VTP Server mode goes offline? What happens to the other switches?

Alistair.

Depends on the VTP revision number of the VTP server in question.

If it comes back online again with a higher revision number than any of the other pre-existing VTP servers, its VLAN info will be propogated to all the VTP servers and clients in the domain - which may cause an issue.

If it has a lower VTP revision number of just one of the pre-existing VTP servers, there should be no effect and it will simply copy the VLAN info from this other server with a higher revision number.

Cisco usually advise to black the VLAN info of any VTP server you want to introduce to a switched network by erasing the configuration and then power cycling the switch in question.
