I have a server to decommision.
Is there any way I can wipe all data and it can not be read by the new owners?

If I rm *.* then write junk over the directories and then remove the directory (rm -R *) be safe?

Please help

The only true secure way to delete data is to use a secure deletion tool that writes over the disk something like 60 times.

hi,
when I have this task, I do :

1) if there are other VG than rootvg, delete them
2) reinstall AIX ( New and complete overwrite ) on the box.

p.s. If you find tools that AIXSPadmin says, perform also this operation before my 1+2 .

bye

you would have to overwrite the whole disk at least three times, say first pass all "1", second pass all "0", etc, to get to "government grade" data wiping, but I don't remember for sure. AIXSP* is usually right. there is also the "big magnet" method if you have a degausser. also the "hammer method" if you don't have need of the disk.

Of course the surest method of safe data deletion is to grind the platters into powder! [bigsmile]
