Decision Stream Oracle source

We are using DecisionStream v. 6.5 RBF 1 with source and target in Oracle version 8.1.
The DBAs will be upgrading the source to Oracle 9 in the near future. I understand that DS 6.5 RBF 2 and 3 are Oracle 9 compliant, but DS RBF 1 is NOT Oracle 9 compliant.
My question is where the compliance breaks out. Can, by any chance, DS 6.5 RBF 1 read an Oracle 9 database while still using Oracle 8.1 as the target database?
