I am trying to run some commands from a manual form Nortel. The commands are cryptic.

From the manual
=======================================================
Enter the Startup access code from a Norstar M7310 or
M7324 telephone dial pad, by pressing
ƒ••ÍÊÅÂÊË which is the same as ƒ••‡°¤‡°°‡ .
=======================================================

I know the ƒ is Feature and •• is **. But the rest of it has me stumped.
Is there a guide that can help me to decipher this so I can run the commands?

Do you have an actual wire-bound manual or are you looking at a PDF ? If a PDF, there are a number of low quality scans floating on the web where the OCR software assigned incorrect character codes to the graphics Nortel uses to show key punch sequences. For example, look at this thread: The actual Nortel manual will list a command using little boxes to simulate the appearance of dialpad keys and show you the alpha mnemonic along with the actual dial pad numerals for things like a startup command. It is those little boxes around the characters that causes some OCR software to attribute the wrong character code.

If you are working from a PDF, search the web for the same manual, select a different source, and re-examine those manual pages.

Otherwise, I suggest getting a degree in Cryptolinguistics with a minor in Alienese from DeVry.

You can also go to our FAQ's and lookup feature codes - "startup"

Personally, I've always been of the opinion that Nortel manuals suck the big one. Poorly organized, repetitive and yet the Installer's manuals don't give step by step instructions.

In a way, that's a good thing though, as clients get frustrated and us in to do routine changes.[2thumbsup]

You have to remember that the Norstar system has been around for a long time. I don't think PDF files were available when they first came out.
I used to install the 6+16 ones in the UK and had to allow a good 10 minutes just to put together the customers admin book which was all shrink wrapped. They were the good old days!.

ƒ••ÍÊÅÂÊË which is the same as ƒ••‡°¤‡°°‡

Avaya site has all the Norstar guides required but only till years end 2017
