Hi,
I sent of a support question to samsung regarding how to setup a printer in solaris 8.

they replyed back with the following :
First of all thank you for using our products.

Please reference for below a method.
1.. "etc/hosts" -> establishment of printer IP & name
After "usr/bin/addmintoll&" -> ENTER

2.. Setting up Print Queues as establishment-value of 1 in printer manager & printer access

3.. We can not supply UNIX driver additionally therefore supported from "LPD/LPR Protocol" of UNIX

Have a nice day!!

Can some please tell me what to do in laymens terms.

thx

does your printer connect to a network directly? if so they are saying that the printer is running LPD, i.e. the 'Line Printer Daemon'

the printer will need it's own IP address, you'll have to set this on the machine, or set it via DHCP/BOOTP ...

then just add the printer from the prompt with :
Code:
lpadmin -p <name of local printer> -s <name/ip address of printer>\!lp

the printer should now work.

thanks
Nope, the printer is a laser parerrell printer.
In does not support postscript.

any ideas.
thx

do you know the model number of your samsung? does it support PostScript, or PCL?

Why not Become a member? :)

thx jad
its a ml 4500.
I'v also noticed that there is a similiar posting regarding this printer from couple of days ago.

Far as i know it does not support any postscript or any other type of device.
However the cd that came with it contains linux drivers.

It spoke to samsung and they said they would not do a port for the solaris platform :(

So i am hoping that some out there knows how to get this printer working.
I do not really want to boot my pc so i can print someting.

thx

ok ... the linux driver for it, so far as i can tell, is a workaround for ghostscript ...

ghostscript can be got for solaris, and in the other post i gave a link to the file that is needed to get ghostscript to talk to it.

you'll need to look around, but it should work (might be slow as it converts it to an image, but shouldn't be too bad on a laser.
