Debugging General Question

Having looked at Spy++ and MFC Tracer - are they any good notes/site to tutor you in how to use them.

For about a year now I have been using Visual Studio .Net (C++) and have been limited to setting breakpoints and doing QuickLooks at the data.

But not much good is messages are not being fired etc.

Am I missing a lot or are these tools just for special situations and require detailed knolowdge?
