Hi,
I've installed debian 3.0 r2 (bf42) and everything went well except an optional package I forgot. The problem I have is that when I boot, first I don't appear at the kde or gnome prompt and the screen is flashing. If I try to start manually kde, it jam when I execute startx. This message appear :

VESA(0): No matching modes
(II) UnloadModule: "vesa"
(II) UnloadModule: "ddc"
(II) UnloadModule: "int10"
(II) UnloadModule: "vbe"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

How can I fix that ? Perhaps I can reconfigure or reinstall X-Windows ? If you need logs, I can post them or give them to you anyway I really need help for setting my comp because I'm trying to make Linux work from like 1 month ago! I've tried almost everything installed mandrake and it erased my bootsec so I decided to install debian anyway.....

Thanks for your help ,

Laurent

Some information about your video card might be helpful, like what kind it is? We'd at least be able to tell if it was supported.

That shouldn't have any problems being used (I have a GeForce 440 MX SE card myself in Gentoo). Natively it should use the "nv" driver under XFree. You'll use "nvidia" if you have the nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx drivers which are separate from both the kernel or XFree86.

It looks like it's just trying to run the VESA driver will is no bueno unless you got specific plans for it!

At the very least you just need to run xf86config of xf86cfg again and make sure to select an nvidia driver.

I am running Debian 3.0/Unstable with a GeForce 440 (something like that, but a PCI version, not AGP). I got this link from #debian:

It was pretty informative, pushed me in the right direction. However, I had better luck using the 'nv' driver rather than the nvidia one.

By the way:
I'm trying to make Linux work from like 1 month ago! I've tried almost everything installed mandrake and it erased my bootsec so I decided to install debian anyway.....

If you mean Linux isn't working just because you can't get the GUI running, don't make it sound like Linux "isn't working". You just haven't told it exactly what it needs to hear ;-). Personally, I had more trouble getting this particular card working than any other card I've use with Linux, so I feel your pain (hey, I'm rusty, it's been a year or so since I had Linux running regularly on the desktop!). You'll get there though, don't fret. Check out that link above.

You can try looking at my XF86Config-4 file if you want:
Just make sure you mod the hsync and vsync stuff to fit your own monitor.
