I'm uk based, but have had a query from a US Goverment body to supply XXX , having dealt with UK departments before there has normally been some sort of "prefered supplier" proccess or a tender process. Does anyone from the UK have any experience of supplying the US or can anyone from the US tell us how it works over there ?

Check your product liability insurance carefully - many will specifically exclude US cover, or need substantially larger premiums. We looked at it a few years ago. Our corporate law guys (and the added insurance costs) scared us off! This was on a relatively low gross margin product, so things may be different for you.

Personally, I avoid doing business with the government -- at any level -- national, state or local. The additional paperwork required makes it 10 times tougher than the private sector, IMHO.

Having said that, I know there are lots of people out there making big bucks doing this, its just that I do not have the bandwidth to take it on.

Tell you what shocked me, is before getting to deal with the US side, I m having mountain to climb with our very own Department of Trade and Industry and HM Customs . For reasons i cant disclose i need to get a export licence ,which is a several step process , each step they are quoting 10 days to complete.

good job im not relying on this job financially, as its beging to become a very long and drawn process.

Update on this im begining to see how this can be profitable in the long term, currently dealing with a UK department at the moment and once i have that out of the way , i'm free to move on to others.

Though it is a big hit initially, both time and money.

Theres a lot of process which , basically end up with you having a certificate to say you dont need a certificate.

All those delays are one reason why the government pays much more for software than a commercial company will. I would suggest you price it accordingly.
