I'm working on a friends site and one of the things he wants me to do is sort out all of the 404 errors that are showing up in his log file.

The site is huge with a vast amount of content. What's the best way to quickly and efficiently find broken links to web pages or files? Any tips on software or techniques would be great.

TIA.

Xenu is the best program I have found for this, you can also give it FTP details to the site and it will tell you which files are not linked to from the website. Works great for weeding out 404s and also for finding files on the webspace that you don't need:

Hope this helps
