My Dell Inspiron laptop froze and I couldn't even shut it down without holding down the power button. When I tried to power it back up, all it did was make a horrible screeching noise. Am I right in my assumption that the hard disk has crashed?

Is the screeching mechanical or coming from the speakers?

If mechanical, it could be a cooling fan - probably worth looking at before blaming the disk.

Richard

You can usually fairly easily remove the hard disk from an Inspiron laptop, so you can eliminate that from the equation pretty quickly.

Does the screen show anything when you try to start it up?

Thanks! I removed the hard drive, and the screeching stopped. And now I know how to replace the drive. Problem solved.
