Switch on G3 - chimes ok as usual - monitor screen grey - and nothing happens.
Same happens with extensions off.
Won't restart from system CD.
Is it the hard disc?
It's my son's G3 - about 15 months old - and was running ok with OS 902. He downloaded OS 904, restarted - and - nothing.
So I can't see that it's the software - so is it the hard disc? And if so, what should he do next? I can fiz software problems, but hardware ones are beyond me.

If it won't start from the CD, that is not the hard disk I love everyone til they prove otherwise, sadly some prove otherwise SO quickly

Have you tryed zapping the PRAM (COMMAND + OPTION + P-R) immediately after you restart the machine.

If you have opened the case up then you could just check to make sure that all the cables are plugged in OK.

Zap the PRAM first. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.

Thanks for the comments.
The problem seems to have gone away. John left the Mac for half and hour or so and then tried again - and it started up.
Judging by what he says he left Norton AntiVirus on when he installed the upgrade - and I think the upgrade rather choked the Norton - all sorts of things to "Allow".
For the moment he says it's OK; but it's all very odd.

ALWAYS disable anti virus programs when upgrading system software. Also, it's best to switch extensions to apple software only. Reboot, upgrade, switch extensions back, and all will be good.
Best of luck,
PT
