Greetings all,
I have a Partner Mail VS R4.0 system that apparently has a bad hard drive. The unit makes a squeaking and clicking for 10-15 seconds when powered up then goes silent. The test, status, and HDD lights all stay on after the POST. The drive mounted to the PC board in the unit is a Seagate 1350MB laptop drive. Is it still possible to get a replacement drive for these units? Should I go directly to Lucent or is there a better third-party source? Am I correct in assuming that I can't just drop any old laptop drive in there?
Any advice appreciated!
-Jason

Jay,

You are correct in your preliminary assessment that your hard drive has failed in your Partner VS R4.0. The Seagate drives have a history of spindle and platter noise and seizure causing the voice mail module to red light and quit operating properly.

There are no easy solutions to your problem ... just dropping in an old laptop hard drive ... as the drive needs to be configured properly and the proprietary Lucent VS R4.1 software loaded onto the new replacement drive and back on the main circuit board.

There are also additional diagnostic steps that need to be followed to professionally repair your voice mail module. Lucent Partner VS modules and other Partner modules also have had a sorted history of power supply problems. Since the power supplies for the VS modules act as both a source of power for the main circuit board as well as a protector/regulator of the power to the main board and its circuitry and hard drive, when the components of the power supply begin to fail or operate below their intended functions, various problems occur on the main circuit board. Important chips -on board fuses - and frequently the hard drives cannot handle the loss of voltage critical regulation from the power supply and also fail.

The best solution is to send your defective Partner VS R4.0 to a company specializing in Lucent voice mail repairs. That will end up being your only real solution to protect your investment and to insure you have your voice mail working properly for the long haul.

Feel free to contact me to discuss those options. Within a few days you can have your voice mail module back up and running on your system.

I have a partner Mail VS R 3.0 that will not answer incoming calls or cannot access voice mail boxes. The test and status lights remain on after rebooting the module and I am not able to do any programing on the Module. Are there
any test I can do at the shop and can I program this module using a laptop via the RS 232 port. If so , does anyone know how to and what kind of software do I need.

Thanks for your replies.
