I hope I can explain this correctly and not confuse myself or anyone to much…

About 4 months ago we moved a fax system to a different part of the building. This fax number had an analog DID line. SBC had to run a new analog line to the new area, and left the old drop in place and the old drop is now dead (which I expected).

Now here is my dilemma, we are needing to move a computer that needs modem access to the old analog line drop (the one that is dead). The modem has its own DID number, but the problem I’m having is I can’t figure out what the TN for the dead analog drop is so I don’t know which wires to switch.

I hooked up a tone generator device (tracer 2 model 77hp) to the dead line and it gets no response at all, I hook it up to the active modem line is the light turns green. Does this mean that the dead drop is totally disconnected from the other side and I would need to run new wire? Or do I just need to find out the dead lines TN number and swap the wire with the active one to get it to move?

I hope I didn’t make this sound more confusing then it really is :)

Joseph... well if i read you right ,,,, you have an old cable that you want to re-use for an analog line..yes

do you have the extn number that used to be on that cable ??

sorry but i do not know you level of expertise.....

Yes i still have the old extn number; however, that number is still in use at its new location

>sorry but i do not know you level of expertise.....
I’ve punched wires and other small stuff before... I know enough to get by normally (or break it totally ;)

When you say DID number, do you mean it comes though the PBX or is it a COT line that comes from the Telco? Does SBC do all yout phone moves or just FAX lines?. If they just move FAX lines then it probablly doesn't go though the PBX and there wouldn't be a TN as it belongs to the Phone Company and would be on there Demarc where the Phone Company Cable comes into the building, so put your toner on it and look for it there.

i'm almost positive it goes though the PBX since all our modem lines and fax lines do. the reason they had to come out was to run a entirely new wire to the location they moved the fax to (took them about 1-1.5 hours to do).
Unfortunaly i wasn't available to watch them do the move so i don't know what they did or didn't do. I do all of the phone moves myself, just never ran into a situation quite like this before.

All the places I have worked had the station cables on 66 blocks and used cross connect wire to connect them to the TN blocks. they may have moved the cross connect from the old station cable to the new cable, so if your trying to find the tone on the TN blocks you won't find it there, you'll have to look for the tone on the station blocks.

thats for info ace, i'll check the blocks and see if i can't get some tone.

you where right ace, i did find the tone on the block and i was able to get it hooked up... your my new hero :)
