Have any of you found a high % of defective brand new media?

How many defective 'should' I expect in a box of 10?

In a box of 10 - zero.
In 10 boxes of 10 (100 tapes) - a few (less than 2)

I have found 4mm (DDS1) and Helical Scan 8mm (5/10 and 7/15 GB) tapes to be very unreliable.

The new Mammoth tapes and AIT are far superior to their predecessors. The DDS2, DDS3 and DDS4 tapes are much better as well.

Bill.
