ddr memory compatibility

After spending hours trying everything to get either WinXP or WinME to load, I think that my frugalness.....read cheap...on buying a 256MB DDR PC2100 stick is coming back to haunt me. Is there a brand that works better or best with an Asus board/Athlon 1800+XP cpu combination? Also, is PC2700 backwards compatible with PC2100. I may be able to get that quicker in my rural area.
