Good morning,

I posted this thread last week on Access-other topics, and got no response. I'm hoping that some of the regulars to this forum will be able to help.

I’ve been running an Access 2000 database on Win98 for several years without a problem. I recently upgraded to a newer computer which has Windows 2000 Professional as the operating system. Since doing this, I have an Access report which will not run properly. Specifically, trying to open the report generates the following error: “DDE Server Window: msaccess.exe - Application Error. The instruction at "0x7783147" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Usually the report will run fine initially, but if I run it repeatedly, I always encounter this error.

I have done a lot of research and it appears that this is a documented problem that can occur with Access reports which are based on complex queries, running on Windows 2000 machines. This seems to fit the bill perfectly, as the only time the problem occurs is when I run this particular report. The report pulls from a query that utilizes a rather involved VBA module. The problem does not occur if I open the underlying query directly.

Thus far, I have attempted to resolve the problem by updating with the latest Windows 2000 service pack, as well as SP3 for Office. I have also downloaded and installed the latest jet file, Jet40Sp3. Finally, I changed the default printer from a HP5000 network printer, to a local printer, as it appears that similar problems have been documented when the default printer was an HP4000.

Bottom line- I’m out of ideas, and the problem persists. What can I do?

I had this problem when we upgraded from Win 95 to Win 2000. We are still using Access 97 so this may not help. I finally narrowed the problem to reports that have "Use specific printer" option selected. Any report that had a specific printer selected would not open to print, preview, or even in design mode. I had to locate an old machine with 95 still installed and open each report and set them to use the default printer. I then opened them in desgn mode on my 2000 machine a reset the "Use specific printer" option.

I hope this helps.

Where do I find the "use specific printer" option?

If you open the report in design view, go to the "File" menu, Select "Page Setup", Click the "Page" tab, and select the "Use Specific Printer" option at the bottom of the dialog box.

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks SO much!
