dde connection to Excel

I have been using a Word document with mail merge from an Excel spreadsheet for many years.
Today when opening the document (and others linking to the same spreadsheet) I get the error message "Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft Excel to complete the current task"

I have ensured the Ignore other applications is unchecked - I have copied and pasted the information to a new spreadsheet and replaced it with the same name.

I still get the error message.

Other Word Documents are merging OK with other spreadsheets.

Did you try re-establishing the connection from scratch?

I managed to overcome the problem -
I had to copy and paste values of the whole spreadsheet by selecting the entire rows with data in to a new spreadsheet.
