Hi

Basic question but if promoting a member server to an aditional Domain Controller in a Windows 2003 domian. Should I install DNS first or as part of DCPROMO (or does it matter). Also before any install should I point the would-be DC to itself for primary DNS or to an alternative DNS server.

Thanks!!

When you promote it, it will ask about dns. If you choose to install it will automatically populate with the domain and forest directory partition as these replicate by default in AD integrated zones, I understand its best practice to point your secondary dc to your primary dns dc dns server and to itself as secondary. This will allow it to see a dns server when it is booting up and will speed the boot up process. (Watch your main dc if you ever reboot it and dns isnt available, it will take alot longer)

Hope this helps.

Cory

Hey thanks for the response. The DC will be in a branch office (same domain) so I was looking at setting DC primary dns to itself and secondary to main site dns/dc (and do this before running dcpromo) - will do some more research though!

Cheers!
