DCPROMO process basic query 1

Hi!

I have a member server that I want to promote as an additional Domain Controller (for a branch office scenario connected to a main office via a VPN). When I run the DCPROMO process (with the /adv switch for restoring from media) the wizard doesn’t give me the option of automatically configuring and installing dns (at least not up until the summary screen to confirm settings and start the install) - should it prompt me prior to then or will it do so during the install?

On the member server the DNS service is not curently installed and the server is pointing to DC/DNS at the main site for DNS.

If you already have the right DNS entries for AD to operate I don't think it is going to prompt you to install DNS on each domain controller you add. If all your branch office computers, including the server you're bringing up as a domain controller are setup to use DNS at your main office it has what it needs. If you want the server to have DNS on it I think you'll have to install the DNS service manually on it (even if you do it after your DCPromo, if you have ADI setup on the zones at your main office they'll come over).

Thanks Mark - much appreciated. The branch office isn’t up and running yet but I was going to deploy the DC and PC's there in one hit (existing head office and existing other branch use forward lookup zone for our internal domain which is Active-Directory integrated with a reverse zone for each subnet/location). So if DNS isn’t auto-installed during DCPROMO I shall install later.
