I'm upgrading our W2K DC's to W2K3.

I've created a fresh W2K3 build, and I'm DCPROMOing them from the existing W2K DCs.

This i've done, but now i'm trying to De-mote one of the existing W2K DCs, but after running DCPROMO I am recieving this message:Failed finding a suitable domain controller for the domain <domain-name>

"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".

On further investigation, the new W2K3 DC hasn't got it's SYSVOL folder shared out, - nor did the "policies" or "scripts" folders exist?

Can anyone offer any help, - I can't understand why the polices didn't copy over, - or why I can't de-mote this W2K box? i've tried altering the DNS addresses on both boxes.

Any help much appcreciated

i was wondering, did you do the forestprep and domainprep on both of the machine?

i'm not an expert, hope this helps

Is your DNS running properly or is your client able to resolve names properly?

Hi,

yes, DNS is working fine.

I think the problem stems from the fact that the group polices wasn't copied over - ie, - this directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\CMS.TEST\Policies

Nor is SYSVOL automatically shared out... ???!

sysvol is automatically shared out via FRS between DCs. However, it does take some time after you DCPROMO the box before everything is copied over.
