I'm trying to promote a Windows 2003 Server to a Domain controller.

There are two existing DC's - both are Windows 2000 SP4

Domain operation mode = mixed mode

The full error message I get after I specify a DSMR password and select the file locations etc is as follows:

Active Directory installation wizard. The operation failed because managing the network session with \\servername.domainname failed. The Workstation service has not been started'.

Can anyone help?

Have you checked to ensure that the service is actually running? I have seen where some servers had been hardened to the point where they cannot perform certain functions that require NetBIOS in order to run. Check to ensure that the Workstation, Server and TCP/IP NetBIOS helper services are running

Also check the Event Viewer to see if anything is logged in there relating to this.

No relevant errors in the Event log in either the Server I'm trying to upgrade or the two exiting DC's

The Workstation, Server & TCP/IP services are started on both DC's.

Funny, but since the weekend when I run DCPROMO I get a different error - nothing has changed that I'm aware of:

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer"

The two existing DC's are Windows 2000 SP4 and the new server I'm trying to upgrade is Server 2003

MS have a fix -
If I do this, will it affect any existing setup or just prepare the new server for upgrade?

Thanks

Should have re-read your original message. You cannot just add a Windows 2003 domain controller into a Windows 2000 based domain. You will need to run the adprep command on the DC that is currently running the Schema Master FSMO role.
See the following;

Thanks for that - I have Exchange 2000 on one of the existing DC's - will it damage anything in the existing setup?
