Hello All

I would like to demote dc that is a server in the same forest but a different tree.

example:
dc 1: example1.local
dc 2: example2.local (is in the same forest but different tree)

When I do a dcpromo example2.local, reason being ldap was unable to establish a connection with example1.local

Am I missing something?

do you have other DC's in the same tree of your forest or are you trying to remove the tree? Is there proper communication between your 2 trees, can you log on as a user from one tree on a computer in the other tree?

example2.local is in a seperate tree but in the same forest(hope I got that out the right way), because from what I was told it was joined to the same forest that example1.local sits in but placed in a different tree.

The thing is that you can log onto example1.local domain from the one I am trying to demote. You can also connect to it usi ng the various MMC snap-ins like using AD users and computers, DNS etc.

Am I missing somthing????

Ta All in advance

If the DC in the second tree is the only DC for a child domain, then as SkreeM has asked, you would be removing the last DC in a domain and therefore the tree. Is this what you want to do?

If you are not demoting the DC to be 'The last DC in the Domain' (or something similar as I can't remember 100%) then you are likely to have this LDAP error as it would be looking for other DC's in the local domain to clean up AD of the DC you are removing. AD would be assuming other DCs in the tree / child are available.

Good luck

Yes this is what I want to do, but while going through dcpromo it asks me to prompt for a user with privilages to example1.local to replicate information from example2.local this is when I get this error
