Hello, my name is Ed and i am running into a problem with my DNS. First off, there is no domain server, we run novell and a as 400, 2nd, this is not my box, i didn't build it it was here before me.

The box is a compaq PII 400, single Natted IP (10.) it is running windows NT 4.0 SP6a. Currently it also has BellManage Bellarc monitor installed on it, anyways DHCP and DNS are installed. My users are nt 4.0 and win 2k workstations. The IP's are set for 90 days at the moment. The problem is that 50 out of 250 IP's arent being seen my DNS, On DHCP for example 10.0.2.11 is registered to user-a.domainname.com but if i look at that IP on DNS, it is not showing, I have refreshed and still no entry, In DNS i am looking at DNS i have 3 options under DHCP-Server Cached/forward/reverse I look in the forward lookup and i cant see the IP or workstation in question, this poses a problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ed

If I correctly understand the issue here, it seems you are looking to DNS for dynamic name resolution. If DNS is a requirement internally for all workstations, the workstations should be issued static IPs (this can still be done via DHCP).

Otherwise, WINS is a better solution since you have a NT box. WINS and DNS will play nicely together and solve the issue of dynamic name resolution.
