DCHP and ICS

Okay, here goes. I gave a small network, 3 pcs and a server. Server is running WinNT. I tyrned off the DCHP on the server, using one PC Win2K as ICS to the internet, two PCs Win98 trying to use the W2K machine. When I set the Win98 machines to obtain IP automatically, they obtain addresses out of range of thw W2K machine. W2K IP is 192.168.0.1 as it is the ICS and mini DCHP server. When I set the Wim98 pcs to use a permanate IP they don't seem too find the internet.

the ics is a simpel router.
if you give static ip to clients, remember to add default gateway = the ip of the ics.

they should also have DNS typically ip of isp.

OK,
The problem is intermittant of the clients finding the ICS server. Sometimes the clients find the ICS server, but most often thge don't. I change the hub and cable between Server and 1 client, still doesn't work.

The system works fine with the server and I can ping to and from all pcs. When I first set the system up to do ICS it work fine. I got paid and everything was great. The client got booted off the network and it has been intermittent since then.

number 1: why do you need two dhcp servers on your network? ICS is known to be incompatible with dns and/or dhcp on the same box, 2 dhcp server that operate without sync on a network will have issues, the ICS should be giving you adequate ip config info unless you need special options like bootp,etc. if you need both, then make sure the scope on the dhcp server is configured as close to the ics as possible. another topic to bring is is: is this win2k pro or server? if it were server NAT is a much better option. there are also issues with dhcp from unauthorized server on windows 2000 domains. hope this helps a bit

I gave up and moved a modem to the NT server and am going to use that for all comm.
The client didn't have telephone lines in the room where the server is.
