Dce/dte cables

I want to link to 2501's together via a serial cable. I understood that I would need to purchase a paticular cable to do this because some of the wires were crossed over and generate a clock signal via the clock command on each serial interface. My supplier told me I would simply need to purchase a male and female DTE lead and connect the two together. This sounds like rubbish to me. Am I right?

Any help with this would be appreciated. Thankyou.

The custom made cables can be had for about 35.00 bucks from Pacific Cable or off eBay.
