Ok, have been using the same domain controller for about a year now, it wasn't new but wasn't old either.

In the last month I've had the following issues which makes me think it's slowly dying, what do you think:

1. Started off getting write delayed failures on remote clients using a unc path to access files (especially in their email, which is outlook)

2. Roaming profile errors, eventid 1509 and similar. says the user doesn't have permission to a file/directory but has full ntfs permissions to it.

3. Drive corruption, took about 4 hours to run chdsk on reboot but said it fixed everything

4. In internet explorer you can no longer manage the addons, the option to enable/disable is greyed out

5. Occasionally all users will get that they can't contact the RPC server and the DC has to be restarted

we went from a fully functioning system with no problems or very minor ones, to having a ton of problems all at once

drive corruption and write delay errors are certainly the sign of a problem. You didn't supply enough info for me to say much more. What RAID level is the data on? Is the RAID controller reporting problems? Do you have some vendor specific monitoring solution, such as Dell's Server Manager, that can provide better insight? Are you only having a problem on that volume, or are other volumes also experiencing problems?

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

the problem is that (and I didn't set this server up) is that it only has a single drive lol.

I told the customer, whether it's crashing or not, I'm putting a server with 4 or 8 gigs of ram and at least 2 hard drives setup with raid1

Take an image and then rebuild the raid to have protection and drop the image back down. Or a totally new server as you say and move the roles. WOW 1 drive; I can't believe it.

dcpromo it down, wipe it. Add a drive and set it as a mirror. Reformat and install Windows again and dcpromo it up.

Because of it's age and internals, it is going to be taken down and evaluated.

In the end, the drive will probably be replaced, and will be used to store ghost images lol

ty guys for the advice. I am going to replace it next week during spring break :p
