Can you change the limitation on the number of fields allowed in dbaseIII and if so how?

Thanks!

dBase III has a default limit of 128 fields per database. However, you may be able to increase this to 512 fields by issuing the SET COMPATIBLE OFF command. (Default is SET COMPATIBLE ON). A word of caution.... this may render your databases unreadable by the dBase III command interpreter so test it on "dummy" database. There's always a better way...

Each version of dBase increased the limits.

dBase 5 and FoxPro 2.6 allowed 254 fields per record with a record limit of about 2 billion records per table. This was a design limit of the tables. Later releases made changes to record structures to allow more fields, records and data types. Of course those newer table structures cannot be read by older programs.
