I want to index dBase3 files on a Netware drive.
The program refuses to carry out the instruction due to insufficient disk space even though there is 20GB free.
Diskspace() returns Zero. I need the index for legacy programs.

Is there a workaround other than indexing locally and RUN COPYing the index?

Verify that either you or the user (whoevers executing the indexing) have sufficient space allocated on the Netware server. It is possible that space utilization is set with limits by the network admin and you're bumping up against that.

Another Novell Netware user had similar problem. I'm not sure if it ever got resolved, but you can read all the suggestions there too.

I had the problem happen to me under just one situation, which may be a possibility you can check out. In my case, I was opening an old table and MDX (Master index file) that had been compressed. It would not allow me to add a tag until I fully decompressed the file. Netware has a couple settings where you can instruct it not to decompress on the disk an older file until it's been accessed a specified number of time in a specified time frame. My setting were 2 times in a week, so I had to REINDEX a couple times, then I was able to add the tag to the index.

While you did not list exactly what you were trying to do (INDEX ON...TO... or INDEX ON...TAG... or something else), if you were trying to add a tag to a MDX then I suspect you may have file compression enabled for files that have not been accessed for a while. It's described in more detail in my posts in the links above.

I posted this in my thread with the same problem, but with dbase 5.

I have not resolved the problem, however, the work I do in this environment is limited to remote programming, so I don't have access to network setings. The shop owner has called his network guy to take a look.

My problems however exist with both new indexes or existing, IE I get the error using any of the following:

Copy to blah
index on bla
use blah index blah, reindex

It is odd though, because a copy with production works. Go figure.

The settings in Dbase 5 seem OK. All of the above work on my personal machine, just not in the network envvironment.

Any way,
Thanks.
