dBASE statements and syntax

Hello and Thanks,

Since my issue is probably elementary I will keep it brief and yes I have researched exhaustingly (libraries, videos,internet, techs, manuals(IRTFM), trial and errors including MS Access and SQL syntax, and now forums...I am getting 'Invalid dBASE expressions' message in GoldMine v6 (contact manager software; frontrange.com;tech support $150 per hour but dBase is not supported,hmmm) dBase is the data access language and am seeking resources for the following:
1.formating fields-> Telephone, SSN...
2.correct syntax for standard accounting calculations
*New to dBASE and moderate experience in T-SQL, SQL92...

I greatly appreciate any direction or conventions
keyword(table->field) ???
